Rethinking Sex Ed at City High Schools
Plus, Boston Marathon officials change qualifying times.

Today is Thursday, Feb. 17. Here are five things you need to know today.
1. Bostonians are fashionable, no matter what those snots from New York say. That, at least, is the crux of this blog: N’East Style. In fact, there is a bit of that style – to be found in form and design – at the Navy Yard. There are nice, artful photos of one of the loveliest parts of the neighborhood posted on the blog, for your viewing pleasure, here.
2. Should kids receive condoms in Boston’s public high schools? Yes, according to a proposal by At-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley. At this week’s City Council meeting she made a controversial statement (depending on who you ask), calling for a comprehensive sexual health education program at city schools. Here’s an excerpt: “I want our young people to know how to protect themselves if they are sexually active. But it’s just as important that our young people know how to say no and not have sex.” .

2. So there’s a special City Council election across town. Maybe you heard something about Councilor Chuck Turner’s seat being open? This Monday there was a primary, the results of which mean that Tito Jackson and Cornell Mills will face off for Turner’s District 7 seat. The election proper will be held on March 15. Our friends at Jamaica Plain Patch have been covering the race and if you’d like to .
4. Boston Marathon times hit a new record this year: tickets for the event sold out in 8 hours, 3 minutes — faster than ever before. Partly in response to the demand, organizers are making it harder to qualify for future runs. Next year, the fastest runners will be able to enter first; in 2013, in addition to rolling admissions, qualifying times for everyone will be shaved by five minutes. Click here for more details.
