Tsarnaev Indicted in Murder of MIT Officer Sean Collier

Middlesex County DA announces grand jury indictment, DA will move forward with criminal charges after the federal trial is completed.

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will face criminal charges in the murder of MIT Officer Sean Collier, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan announced Thursday morning. Collier was a Wilmington native.

“Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted by a Middlesex County Grand Jury for the murder of Sean Collier and we intend to move forward with criminal charges against Tsarnaev after the current federal trial is completed,” said District Attorney Ryan in a statement. “In addition, the investigation remains active into the incident which occurred on Laurel Street in Watertown on Friday, April 19. The written investigatory report concerning the Laurel Street incident is anticipated to be completed within two months.”

Collier was killed four days after the Boston Marathon bombings when he was ambushed in his police cruiser by two men who were the center of the manhunt that terrorized the state and the region, killing four and injuring more than 170 others.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office has jurisdiction concerning the investigation into the April 19, 2013 incident in Watertown on Laurel Street during which law enforcement officers attempted to apprehend Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

In addition, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office has jurisdiction to prosecute the criminal case in connection with the murder of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier in Cambridge on April 18, 2013.
