Week in Review: Conley Joins Mayoral Race, Casino Presentation and an Unsubstantiated Rumor

A look at some of the top stories on Charlestown Patch last week.

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Charlestown Patch this week:

  1. District Attorney Conley Announces Bid for Mayor—In a statement sent to the press, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley declared his candidacy for Boston mayor on Wednesday afternoon. Check out Patch's recap of who's running and who's not so far in the mayoral race.
  2. Charlestown Groups Hear Suffolk Downs Casino Plan—Charlestown residents on Wednesday heard plans for a new casino development at Suffolk Downs—one of three projects vying for a gaming license in the greater Boston area—as proponents look for local support during the next phase of their applications.
  3. Todd English's Olives Rumored To Be Closing—Rumors that Todd English’s Charlestown restaurant Olives would be closing circulated on local news and social media sites on Monday, but it turned out to be nothing more than an April Fool’s joke. English himself sent out an announcement promising the restaurant would not be closing anytime soon.
  4. Menino Wants Cab Industry Investigated—With the local taxicab industry thrust into the spotlight by a major media outlet, Boston’s mayor has ordered an oversight review. 
  5. Police Reports: Man Threatens to Shoot Another Over ‘Hello’—One man allegedly threatened to shoot another man after he said “hello” to him while passing on Monument Street on Friday, March 29.
  6. CHAD Plans Charlestown Youth Athlete Breakfast—Former Boston Bruin Brian Leetch will be the guest speaker at an upcoming breakfast open to young Charlestown athletes.
  7. Teamsters Local 25 To Go Blue April 2—The Teamsters Local 25 building illuminates blue for the third year in a row on April 2 to support Autism Speaks’ Light It Up Blue (LIUB) campaign to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month.
  8. Get From Boston To Cape Cod For $35—The CapeFlyer train service, which connects Cape Cod to Boston, will start on Memorial Day weekend, for $20 one way or $35 round trip.
  9. City Looking to Hire Poll Workers for Upcoming Elections—With three special elections coming up this spring, the city of Boston is looking to hire extra people to serve as poll workers, especially residents who are bilingual, the city announced this week.  
  10. Street Cleaning Begins Bostonwide on April 1—Street sweeping returned Bostonwide on April 1.
