Police Seize More Than 18 Grams of Heroin in Drug Bust

Ipswich Police found crack cocaine, heroin, and Clonazepam during a drug arrest last week.

IPSWICH, MA – Police arrested a Lowell man after they responded to a report of two people trying to drag a third person into a car last Thursday night.

Officers responded to Agawam Village at 10:20 p.m., and met a woman who said she was driving by and saw a man on the ground, who later appeared to have overdosed and was transported to the hospital. The woman told police she was visiting a friend at Southern Manor in Agawam Village, who police later arrested.

Michael Joseph Meehan, 20, of Lowell, was arrested on charges of trafficking heroin, possession of crack cocaine, possession of Clonazepam, possession with intent to distribute a class D substance, and trespassing.

According to a statement from Ipswich Police, Meehan was issued a no trespass order in October 2015, which forbids him from being on any land owned by the Ipswich Housing Authority, including Southern Manor.

During the booking process, police conducted an inventory of Meehan's personal property and located drugs, including more than 18 grams of heroin, as well as drug paraphernalia.

"This is another great example of Ipswich Police officers utilizing their training and experience to recognize that something wasn’t right," Police Chief Paul Nikas said. "I am proud of the responding officers for executing the proper follow up in this situation, which ultimately led to a major drug arrest."

Meehan is scheduled to appear in Newburyport District Court on March 16, for a dangerousness hearing.
