Ritzer Family and Community Members React to Philip Chism Guilty Verdict
"No matter what happens in life, be good to people."

DANVERS, MA - One of Colleen Ritzer’s favorite quotes was “there is something good in everyday.”
The gruesome murder and rape of popular teacher Colleen Ritzer in Danvers High School two years ago stunned and shocked the community, but on the day eight men and four women found Philip Chism guilty of first-degree murder, members of the community found good in the jury, judge, district attorney’s office and law enforcement for their work.
Shortly after the jury delivered a guilty verdict for Philip Chism on Tuesday afternoon in Salem Superior Court, District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, along with Ritzer’s family, held a brief press conference, and Acting Danvers Police Chief Patrick Ambrose and Superintendent Lisa Dana reacted through statements.

The acting chief commended Danvers Police and Massachusetts State Police who were involved in this investigation for their professionalism.
“I would like to thank the jurors for their service, Judge Lowy for his expertise and the staff of the Essex County District Attorney’s office for their tireless efforts in the pursuit of justice,” Acting Chief Ambrose said.
Peggie Ritzer, Colleen Ritzer’s mother, also thanked the jury, judge and law enforcement, especially for the kindness they showed the family, the same kindness that defined her daughter.
“To celebrate our love for her and in recognition of the many lives Colleen touched and continues to influence despite the immense loss we are forced to endure,” Peggie Ritzer said. “We will carry on and do our very best to find the good in every day.”
The Ritzer family also issued a statement on the jury verdict.
School Superintendent Lisa Dana said the school district appreciates all of the support teachers and students received from the District Attorney’s office throughout the trial, as well as the incredible outpouring of support from the community and beyond since the tragic death of Colleen Ritzer.
“Now that a verdict has been reached, we hope that our community, others that have been affected and most especially the Ritzer family can continue to heal. We know Colleen’s message, “No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good is a wonderful legacy to leave behind,” will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her,” Dana said.
Danvers Firefightes weighed in on Facebook, “Pay it forward with random acts of kindness in memory of Colleen. May her spirit and kind heart live on forever.”
