Danvers Public Schools is sharing the results of a ‘Perspectives on Schools’ Survey, open to parents, staff and students in middle and high school. A key component of the district’s strategic plan, this is the second annual survey examining where the district has made strides in providing services to Danvers students.

Working in conjunction with independent research and communication firm K12 Insight, the district invited all participants to weigh in on topics including academic preparation; student support; school leadership; faculty relations and support; parent engagement; safety and behavior; and school operations.

A total of 2,613 people responded to the survey, including 859 parents, 321 staff members and 1,433 students, similar to the response rates in 2010. Overall, most teachers (90%), parents (81%) and students (58%) graded their school as an “A” or “B” for the quality of education, comparable to the 2010 feedback.

“We want to thank everyone who took the time to participate and share their thoughts,” said Dr. Lisa Dana, Superintendent of Schools. “As a result of the feedback we received last year, we have already worked to improve transition programs for our students moving from fifth to sixth grade and from eighth to ninth grade, and we will continue to build on this positive momentum by focusing attention on the support our students receive during these critical transition years.”

In response to questions concerning mutual respect between students and teachers, elementary teachers and middle school students and staff reported higher levels of respect than did high school respondents. Compared to 2010, however, high school staff and students reported an improvement in the atmosphere of mutual respect. In terms of areas that require additional attention, respondents identified technology infrastructure and support, as well as availability of materials necessary for effective teaching.

“We will be exploring opportunities for improvement in those areas within the limits of our current budget constraints,” said Dana. “And, as we continue building a culture of respect within our schools, we will also focus on further reducing bullying behavior and overseeing the successful conclusion of the high school construction project. This ongoing, candid conversation with our stakeholders moves us closer to our goal of preparing all our graduates to be productive, collaborative 21st century citizens.”
