3 Prisoner Deaths In 30 Days At MCI-Norfolk Under Investigation By State Police
The three prisoners died between Sept. 20 and Monday.
NORFOLK, MA — The deaths of three inmates in 30 days at a Massachusetts prison are under investigation by the state police.
“The Department of Correction can confirm three recent deaths at MCI-Norfolk, which remain under investigation by State Police Detectives assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the DOC," the department said in an emailed statement.

"Our staff responded immediately in each instance and worked alongside emergency responders to provide life-saving measures," the statement said. "Cause and manners of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and it is premature to speculate at this time. Preliminary information indicates no signs of foul play. "
The first prisoner died after MCI-Norfolk staff responded to a medical emergency about 1 a.m. Sept. 20, according to the statement.

"Staff immediately began to administer life-saving measures and called 911," the statement said. "The Norfolk Fire Department arrived within minutes and transported the individual to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased."
Then, seven days later about 1:20 a.m., prison staff responded to another "medical emergency involving an incarcerated individual," according to the statement."

As with the first inmate, the second prisoner was also taken to an area hospital and died, the statement said.
The third death involved a medical emergency about 5:15 p.m. Monday. Staff again administered life-saving measures and called 911, according to the statement, and the prisoner was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

MCI-Norfolk is the "largest medium security level facility in Massachusetts, housing criminally sentenced males," according to the state's website.
