Following years of advocacy, community support, and hard work by staff, elected officials, and local volunteers, Dedham has a new senior center. Built into the first floor of the refurbished and renovated Ames School, the fittingly named Ames Senior Center is conveniently located within Town Hall, just outside the Dedham Square.

“We are thrilled with our new home and all the opportunities we have with our expanded space at the Ames Senior Center,” said Council on Aging Director Sheila Pransky. “Our community members have waited for decades for a dedicated area to call home and one that allows our team to host a variety of programs and services. We owe a debt of gratitude to all those who worked so hard to bring the dream of this building to fruition and look forward to serving this community for generations to come.”

After having operated out of Traditions in Dedham for years and utilizing other offsite locations for specialized classes and programs, the Ames Senior Center team is excited to bring everyone home. Within this new center are multi-purpose rooms, equipped with technology and resources to offer classes ranging from exercise and dance, to gardening and painting.

“We are extremely excited about the new Ames Senior Center, and grateful to all involved who worked to finally achieve a decades long goal of a senior center for our Town,” said Council on Aging Chair Leanne Jasset. “As we celebrate this milestone, it is important we pause and remember those who shared in our efforts and are no longer with us. Countless members of our community dedicated themselves making this a reality. We look forward to welcoming everyone to tour the new center on October 2nd, to meet old friends and make new ones, and to sign up to join the many activities and events planned for the coming months.”

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will follow tradition and include a large ribbon and remarks from local officials and members of the community who helped to make this center a reality. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., guests will be welcomed to the outdoor patio for a chance to see old friends, make new friends, and connect with neighbors and local dignitaries prior to the ceremony. Following the ribbon cutting and remarks, guests will be welcomed indoors where staff and volunteers will provide tours with live demonstrations, and help those interested register and sign up for upcoming classes.

Spread the word to your friends and neighbors, all are invited to attend because the Ames Senior Center truly is a place for Dedham’s older adults to stay active, have fun, and build new friendships.
