McGuire Announces Bid for Sherborn Selectmen

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Ed McGuire and I am running for the Sherborn Board of Selectmen. Many of you may already know me. My wife, Erin O’Boyle, and I have two kids, Brighid and Andrew, and we have lived on Nason Hill Road since 1995. Over the past five years, I have had the privilege and opportunity to serve on various Sherborn Boards and Committees, and I believe that now is the time, given the open Selectman’s seat, for me to step up and continue my strong commitment to make a difference in our great town.

I’m running for Selectman because I feel that it is time to bring heightened focus in our town government to the concerns of the silent majority of professionals, and parents of school aged children, who pay the majority of taxes here.  We parents and professionals represent about seventy percent of the town and the majority of the tax dollars our town collects. However, because of the time and energy we spend on our strong personal commitments to our families and careers, it is very difficult for us to make our voices heard on many critical issues that directly affect us. I believe our input, as well as every constituent’s, is needed on a consistent basis, and is imperative (and only fair) in the process. As Selectman, I want to make sure our voice (as well as everyone’s) will be clearly heard and our interests duly served. 

Amongst us, I have the rare opportunity with my family’s support, as a stay-at-home parent, to make the time and effort to contribute to the town at the highest level: Selectman.  I believe my track record shows I am a dedicated town volunteer-- willing to consistently make that time and effort-- based on the various positions I have already held, and the accomplishments I have made with the committees I have served.  Presently, I am Chair of the Sherborn School Committee and have served the Board for 3 years.  In this position, I have developed significant first-hand knowledge concerning the high quality of education being provided to our children, and have been involved in difficult budget related decision making that --despite the economic climate of the last few years--has maintained the high quality of our school. I was also a member of the contract negotiation team that successfully negotiated a very favorable teacher’s contract which will positively impact the Town of Sherborn from a financial perspective.

I am President of Dover-Sherborn Youth Basketball and the Treasurer of the “Friends of the Sherborn Library,” positions which I have held for 5 years.  I am also a member of the Sherborn Energy Committee which, this year, successfully qualified our town as “green” under the Green Communities Act and obtained $137,450  in funds for the town to use on more “green” projects.  I have also served as a Board Member of the Pine Hill Elementary School Community School Association (the school’s version of a PTA) for 2 years, and held the position of CSA “Auction Business Manager” for 4 years.  I have also proudly volunteered my time for the Dover Sherborn “Snappers” (Farm Pond) Swim Team for the past 4 summers.   As a Selectman, I would like to continue my efforts and commitment to make positive change in the town.

Before I decided that I would be a “Stay-at-Home Dad,” with my wife’s support, I worked professionally in various capacities. In terms of my education, I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from Boston University. Professionally, I have worked as a Systems Engineer for the US Navy Lab in Newport, RI, and a Systems Engineer for the Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, MA. I have also been a Manager of Energy Conservation Programs and a Manager of IT Programs for the Transmission & Distribution department at Boston Edison/NStar.  I put my professional career “on hold” to be a “Stay-at Home Dad” in 2000 when Brighid was born. About one year later, my son Andrew was born, which cemented my position.

I believe that now is the time for me to take the next step and carry our shared values to the Board of Selectmen where I can advocate for the things that we--as tax-payers, professionals and families--want to see happen. Our town is undergoing a positive and aggressive change, with our current Board of Selectmen fundamentally overhauling our town government.  I want to make sure that we will remain an integral component of the process throughout the overhaul and beyond – joining all constituents, as it should be.

 If you agree with what I stand for, and want to make sure that our voice is clearly and distinctly heard while our government changes, then I urge you to come out and support my candidacy for Sherborn Selectman. I will work for you and the issues we care about. Our town could be a better place for all of us and I’d like to represent you as that happens.

I urge you to support me at the upcoming Caucus on March 1^st , at Town Meeting in April, and in the subsequent election in May. In order to do that, you’ll have to find a few hours to vote for me on March 1^st , and at the Town Election in May. I promise, those few hours will pay off in a more balanced and brighter future.

We are fortunate to live in a great town, with many great neighbors and volunteers, who all support each other. I would be privileged to serve you as a Selectman.
