Search Process Under Way For New Dover Police Chief

The search committee is has received more than 30 applicants for the job.

For the past three months, Dover's Interim Chief Jeffrey Farrell has been wondering who is going to take his job.

Farrell was appointed the position after former police chief Joseph Griffin retired back at the end of August.

As of right now, a search committee appointed by the Board of Selectmen is in the process of finding a permanent chief, so Farrell can retire, as well.

"The job has been posted so people will be applying for the job from both outside the department and within the department," Farrell said. "They have had 35, or so, applicants and they've all been notified by letter that they'll receive additional information, but when that will be I don't know."

Farrell didn't throw his hat into the ring for the permanent position because he is hoping to retire some time in 2011.

"I don't have enough time left. I'm too close to retirement. I'll be leaving at about the same time that the new chief comes in," said Farrell.

The proceedings of the search committee have been kept classified, thus far, according to Farrell, so it is not certain when the search will end and a new chief will be named.

"To be honest with you I don't know. They're keeping me out of it. They're keeping the town administrator out of it. It's all very confidential so far," Farrell said.
