George Allen of the Easton Police Department was recognized for his work as a resource officer in the Easton Public Schools Tuesday night at the Brockton Rox's celebration of the annual National Night Out Against Crime.
Allen was among the public safety officials and residents from 11 area towns honored for having a positive impact on their communities. Each honoree received a plaque on field during the August 7 game, a contest between the Rox and the visiting Seacoast Mavericks.
After a 32-year career with the Easton PD, Allen is retiring in December of this year. He has been a school resource officer in Easton since 2006. From 1999-2003 he also worked with Easton's youth as the police department's D.A.R.E. [Drug Abuse Resistance Education] Officer.
"It's great, I love it," Allen said of his joint role with the police department and schools. "The kids appreciate it, the school personnel and staff support the program. We work well together."
Easton Police Sgt. James McAvoy presented Allen with his award.
"I've known George for years...You won't find a more passionate and dedicated employee in the Easton Police Department," McAvoy said. "It's an honor for me to be here giving him this award...[Allen] is the most passionate person in the department bar none."
Allen said his last day in the schools is December 21, the last day before winter break starts for the students.
"I've lived out a boyhood dream," Allen said of working as a police officer.
The National Night Out Against Crime, hosted by Partnership For Safer Communities, took place at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, home of the Rox.
Police departments from Abington, Avon, Bridgewater, Brockton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Holbrook, Randolph, Stoughton, West Bridgewater and Whitman participated in the festivities, which included a petting zoo, pie eating contest, K-9 demonstration, appearances by McGruff the Crime Dog and Sparky the Fire Dog, and a motorcade of local police vehicles
