4 Animals Die In Cape Cod Fire

A Falmouth apartment building was deemed uninhabitable after the weekend fire.

FALMOUTH, MA — Four animals are dead after a serious fire at a Cape Cod apartment building over the weekend.

Falmouth Fire and Rescue officials responded to a structure fire at 15 Davisville Rd. on Saturday, successfully evacuating all residents from the four-unit apartment building.

At approximately 5 p.m., Falmouth Emergency Communications received a 911 call from an occupant reporting a fire in a first-floor apartment. The caller was uncertain whether other tenants remained in the structure.

Engine 25 arrived on scene to find a "significant" fire that had extended to the exterior of the first-floor apartment, officials said. Fire crews immediately advanced a hose line and knocked down the flames while conducting primary and secondary searches of the first floor for additional occupants.

Engine 20 and Ladder 26 crews simultaneously conducted primary and secondary searches of the second floor. Both searches confirmed that all human occupants had safely exited the building.

During the first-floor search, firefighters removed one dog from the structure and attempted life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.

"Tragically, a total of three dogs and one cat perished in the fire," officials said.

The fire was declared under control by 5:20 p.m. Fire crews conducted overhaul operations and initiated a fire investigation.

The structure was deemed uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist displaced residents. All fire crews cleared the scene by 7:00 p.m.

The fire remains under investigation by the Falmouth Fire Rescue Fire Investigation Unit. The cause has not yet been determined.
