Cape Cod SWAT Standoff After Pellet Gun Shooting: Police

Eastham police said Stanley Cannon shot a man at a motel then engaged in a standoff with officers.

EASTHAM, MA — A Cape Cod man was arrested Tuesday after police said he shot a man with a pellet gun at a motel then engaged in a standoff with officers. Stanley Cannon, 35, of Eastham, was charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said he has an "extensive" criminal record.

Police said Cannon shot a man with a pellet gun at about 9 p.m. in the parking lot of Town Crier Motel.

"The responding officers located a victim in the parking lot of the motel with blood on his face and hands," Eastham police said in a statement. "The victim indicated that he had been struck by pellets fired from a pellet gun at close range, and also had been struck by the butt end of the pellet gun during the altercation."

The victim was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

After the shooting, Cannon fled to his Eastham apartment and refused to answer the door, police said. The Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team responded to the scene due to Cannon's record and "the possibility that more weapons may have been present within his apartment," police said.

A negotiator convinced Cannon to exit the apartment and surrender at about midnight, police said. His pellet gun was seized. Orleans police and Wellfleet police assisted at the scene.

Cannon was held on $3,000 bail pending an arraignment Wednesday in Orleans District Court.
