Fire At Cape Cod High School Forces Students To Evacuate

A roof fire at Mashpee Middle-High School forced an evacuation on Monday, but classes are set to resume on Tuesday.

MASHPEE, MA — A fire at Mashpee Middle-High School prompted an evacuation on Monday, school officials said.

News of what school officials called a "fire incident" was shared around 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Officials shared shortly after that they weren't cleared to let anyone back in the building that day, though school operations resumed on Tuesday.

"We want to inform you that there has been a fire incident at Mashpee Middle High School," officials said. "All students and staff have been safely evacuated from the building, and everyone is accounted for. The area fire departments and local police are currently on site, and they are handling the situation."

Officials said there was no danger to any students or staff.

Mashpee fire officials said they responded to a fire in a rooftop heating unit around 9 a.m. Crews said they discovered "heavy smoke and flames" coming from the unit.

The fire began extending into the roof of the building, officials said, but crews extinguished it by 9:20 a.m.

After "extensive" overhaul operations, the school was returned to the Department of Public Works and school officials around 1 p.m., officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
