MA Community To Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of 'Jaws'

The legendary film brought New England to the masses. Now, the community where the movie was made is celebrating 50 years of "Jaws."

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA — "Jaws" has an outsized place in New England's cultural history, and, now that the movie is celebrating 50 years, one local community is set to celebrate alongside the film in a big way.

National Geographic and Amblin Documentaries, in conjunction with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce and Circuit Arts, will present the premiere of "Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story," this month.

The upcoming documentary uncovers the behind-the-scenes stories of the bestselling novel and Steven Spielberg’s film, while also diving into our enduring fascination with sharks.

A free screening is set for June 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center, launching into a weekend of "Jaws" 50th anniversary festivities.

After the screening, the Chamber of Commerce will host Jaws: The After Party at The Harbor View Hotel's Roxy Pool Bar and Great Lawn.

The celebration continues on June 21 with a 50th anniversary presentation of "Jaws" in Concert at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort. It gives a unique opportunity to watch a screening of the entire film with the Cape Symphony performing John Williams’ Academy Award-winning musical score live and in sync to the picture.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is also running an exhibition dedicated to the film’s production on Martha’s Vineyard. Running from May 24 to September 7, this exhibit will feature rare photographs, oral histories, original art and movie props, showcasing how Martha’s Vineyard became the fictional Amity Island.

The Museum will also host Amity Homecoming Weekend from June 19-23 featuring memorabilia, a to-scale replica of the Orca interior, special programs and talks, and an exclusive Reunion Day event on June 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in collaboration with The Vineyard Gazette Media Group.
