5 Things for Sept. 27: Mystery iPad Donor Revealed, Free Prostate Cancer Blood Screenings and More

1. NWS Calls for Partly Sunny Thursday in Foxborough

Today’s weather in Foxborough, according to the National Weather Service based in Taunton, calls for patchy fog before 9 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 68. North wind 6 to 9 mph. Thursday night: A chance of rain, mainly after 3 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 47. East wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

2. Foxborough High School Classroom Receives Four iPads

Last month, Foxborough Patch reported a mystery classroom within the Foxborough Public School District would be receiving four iPads from a former staff member.

This week, Foxborough Schools Superintendent Debra Spinelli revealed to Foxborough Patch who that mystery donator was and which classroom received the four iPads.

“Jan Donaway donated the iPads to Diane Galanti's special education classroom at Foxborough High School, where she worked for several years,” Spinelli said.

Donaway, who recently retired, wanted to donate four iPads to benefit the special education program and its students.

“This donation is really quite wonderful,” said Spinelli

3. Free Prostate Cancer Blood Screenings at Patriot Place

As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness month, Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center is partnering with its Foxborough neighbors, the New England Patriots and Patriot Place to offer free prostate cancer blood screenings on Sept. 27 and 28 at Patriot Place.

Prostate cancer is the second most common and deadly cancer among American men. However, the five-year survival rate for men diagnosed with the disease has increased from 67 percent to 99 percent over the last 20 years, underscoring the importance of screening.

The screening, known as a PSA, or prostate specific antigen, is an important tool in helping to diagnose, monitor and guide treatment. The test involves a needle stick and drawing a small amount of blood. PSAs are typically performed annually, starting at the age of 50 for most men and at the age of 45 for those in high-risk groups, such as African–American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer.

New England Patriots Hall-of-Famer Troy Brown kicked off the initiative on Sept. 14, by having his PSA drawn. Screenings will take place on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28, from noon to 6 p.m. at 20 Patriot Place.

4. Warriors Game Day:

The following Foxborough High School teams will be in action Thursday:

• Boys’ golf hosts Milford at 3:30 p.m.
• The cheerleading squad will compete in a Jamboree at North Attleboro beginning at 6:30 p.m.

• 9 p.m. - LEVEL ONE at CBS Scene: Join CBS Scene at its nightclub, LEVEL ONE, at where DJ Plan B will be spinning music all night long.
• 9:30 p.m. - Natalie Turgeon Band at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill: Small town girl, Natalie Turgeon is taking the country world by storm with her powerful vocals and a talented band.  Natalie’s inspiration stems from Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert and shows in her commanding performances.
