Uninterrupted Work Cycle; a hallmark of the Montessori method.
During the uninterrupted work cycle, children can engage in their work deeply and repeat it to their satisfaction.

At the beginning of the week, assistant teacher Carrie created a STEM lesson. The tray had toothpicks and marshmallows that the student would build structures. The teacher made a simple two-dimensional square for inspiration and presented the material to the students. As the days progressed, the designs became more complex; a cube, a triangle, and a triangle stacked on top of a cube. The first reaction of one of the students when she looked at the triangle stacked on top of a cube was, “ I can’t do this. This is hard. Only Ms. Carrie can build this.” The teacher encouraged the student to try but did not pressure her.
For the past two days, this student has been working hard to figure out how to build this structure. There were many trials and errors when stabilizing the design, calculating the right amount of toothpicks and marshmallows to use, and how to stack them, but she stuck with the task. Today is day three of this student working on this project. At 9:15 am, when I went into the classroom, I saw her working on the STEM project, and she successfully finished it! The structure was strong and replicated the one Ms. Carrie made.

Dr. Montessori said, “Repetition is the secret of perfection.” This student freely chose to work on this lesson repeatedly and finally mastered it. An uninterrupted three-hour work cycle further aided the mastery of this skill. During this uninterrupted work cycle, children have the opportunity to engage in their work deeply and repeat it to their satisfaction. The look of immense concentration, devotion to the exercise, and the smile on the student’s face says it all.
