Baking embodies all the goals of the Montessori Practical Life lesson; order, concentration, coordination, and independence.

Bread making has been added to our Practical Life area of the downstairs classroom. This lesson embodies all the goals of Practical Life; order, concentration, coordination, and independence. The work is prepared to give the children independence in putting together the ingredients in the proper order, mixing, then kneading the dough (oh what fun!). The children shape the dough into “Hedgehog” rolls, use tongs to make the spikes, and add raisins for the eyes and noses. And we eat a few raisins along the way! Next is clean-up, and the children wash the dishes, table, and countertops. The children see how the dough rises after an hour or so, then we bake! The class devours the bread together at line time with a little butter or olive oil, or plain, too, and thank the children who made the delicious bread. When building a loving, joyful community, breaking (and making) bread together never begins too early, and is always in style! Visit our website to read the blog in its entirety.
