New England Patriots Trade For Josh Gordon

The embattled wide receiver is reportedly getting a fresh start at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — A Cleveland Browns wide receiver is getting change of scenery, and Tom Brady is getting a top target.

The Cleveland Browns have confirmed that they have sent Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Patriots will receive a fifth-round pick. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was the first to report that the Browns were nearing a deal with the Patriots.

Gordon is widely regarded as one of the most talented receivers in the league, but he has long struggled with substance and alcohol abuse. He missed 11 games in 2014 after a drunken driving arrest and didn't play in 2015 or 2016 due to failed alcohol and drug tests. He finally returned at the end of last season.

The Browns worked with Gordon as he attempted to straighten things out, even allowing him to leave the team during training camp.

Rapoport said Gordon injuring his hamstring at a promotional photo shoot was enough for Cleveland.

"...Unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward," Browns general manager John Dorsey said in a statement released Saturday.

The Browns intended to release Gordon Monday, but instead considered trade offers.

Gordon's best season came in 2013 when he caught 87 receptions for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns.
