PHOTOS: Foxborough Preschoolers Celebrate Peace at King's Wood Montessori

Friday was a day of peace at King's Wood Montessori School in Foxborough as preschool students celebrated International Peace Day.

"The children have been learning about world peace in their classrooms and this is an integral part of the Montessori Curriculum," said Joan Reale, director of the King's Wood Montessori School.

Children gathered around the school's playground and garden to share what peace meant to them, sing a song of peace and celebrate the unveiling of a Peace Pole in the school’s garden.

"The children [wrote] on paper what they imagine peace to be," Reale said.

Some of those messages of peace were "love," "quiet," "rainbows" and "hope."

Those messages and others were placed in a basket under the Peace Pole and the children, along with their teachers, sang the song, "May there be Peace," by Scottish singer and songwriter, Bob Martin.

As part of the Montessori's curriculum, the teachers also read age-appropriate books to students, which explain what peace is and how peace can be promoted in classrooms, homes and communities.

"They each have a ‘peace corner’ in their classroom where one can go for a quiet moment, learn about peace, or resolve a conflict," Reale said.

Parents, family members and friends joined the peace celebration at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday. The school planted a Peace Pole in its garden, which was revealed during a ribbon cutting ceremony that revealed words of peace written in four languages. 

"This pole will be a permanent fixture in our garden and will be a constant reminder to all to strive for peace," said Reale.

A Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth, according to information provided by Reale. Each Peace Pole bears the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in different languages on each of its four or six sides. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in nearly every country in the world dedicated as monuments to peace.
