5 Things You Need To Know Today in Framingham: August 27

Today is the first day of school for kindergarten students in Framingham Public Schools and freshman at Keefe Technical School.

1. Break out the tissues - for parents. Today is the first day of school for members of the Class of 2028 for Framingham Public Schools. Kindergartners start school today, Aug. 27 at the town’s nine elementary schools.

Yesterday, was the first day of school for students in grades 1-12 in the public school district.

In June, the former Framingham Public Schools Director Family and Community Engagement said the incoming kindergarten class was bigger than 750 students.

Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott told Framingham Patch that there are more than 8,600 students in the district this year, up from 8,153 students in 2014-15, as reported to the state in October 2014.

2. Keefe Technical freshman return to class today, but the rest of the students have another weekend, and go back to school on Monday, Aug. 31.

3. Framingham Fire department responded to a small fire at on Ruthellen Road on Wednesday night, just after 6 p.m. The fire was reported at 11 Ruthellen Road. No one was injured.

4. The Framingham Skatepark Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 at the Framingham Parks & Recreation office at 475 Union Avenue. Weather permitting, the 11-member Committee is expected to go on a field trip to Butterworth Park at 261 Grant Street to look at its potential for the new skate park.

Earlier in August, the Committee visited Farm Pond to consider its potential as a skate park location.

In May, Town Meeting voted to move forward with plans to build a skate park in the Town of Framingham. Town Meeting voted 124-4 to spend $50,000 to design a concrete skate park in the Town of Framingham. Estimated costs to build the concrete skate park is $250,000 to $450,000, and plans are to be submitted back to Town Meeting no later than 2016.

The Town of Framingham put out a request for bids for a designer/firm for the skate park last week. Bids are due back to the Town of Framingham by Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.

5. The Framingham Public Library and the Framingham Public Library Foundation both have fundraisers today.

Fans can enter through Gates A & D beginning at 6:45 p.m. with warning track access and photo opportunities in front of the Green Monster and Red Sox Dugout from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The movie begins at 8:00 p.m.
