'Abandoned' Framingham Piglet Transferred For Adoption

A piglet was left in Framingham but will soon be taken to another area shelter for proper care before being put up for adoption.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — A unique pet will soon be put up for adoption at a local shelter, but it won't be in Framingham.

The local police department shared on Wednesday morning that a piglet was "abandoned by its owner" in Framingham.

It was picked up by animal control after a "good samaritan" called for assistance, but Framingham doesn't have the proper facilities for longterm livestock care, police said.

So the piglet will be transferred to the Animal Rescue League of Boston's Dedham shelter for adoption.

Animal experts cite celebrity culture as part of the reason for a rise in pet pigs in recent years, but has also meant an increase in pets being turned in to animal shelters as homeowners have realized keeping the animal as a pet was more difficult than expected.

Though experts say pigs have the intelligence to be housetrained, much like dogs, there are other factors that make keeping them as pets unique.
