ICYMI: Former Framingham Cop Allegedly Stole $20,000 From Police Evidence Room

Almost a year and a half after the officer was first placed on leave, he was charged Thursday.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — A former Framingham police officer has been charged after allegedly stealing around $20,000 in cash from the police department's evidence room, the culmination of an investigation that first became public in September 2015.

Alan Dubeshter, formerly a patrolman with the department, was charged Thursday with larceny of more than $250 and obtaining an unwarranted privilege. He was indicted by a Middlesex County Grand Jury Thursday.

Dubeshter, who oversaw the department evidence room, has been on leave since September 2015. He subsequently resigned in April 2016, according to the state Attorney General's office. Patch previously reported Dubeshter had been with department for decades, prior to being placed on leave.

The AG's office alleges that evidence envelopes were found in Dubeshter's personal vehicle, and said an investigation showed numerous additional envelopes found in his truck were tampered with, and the money removed. The alleged theft was limited to cash only, according to an audit.

"As the Town Manager, I am relieved that the investigative phase of this incident has reached its conclusion," said Town Manager Bob Halpin in a statement.

He said the Town will not comment further regarding specifics of the case, given the pending judicial proceedings.

The criminal investigation began with the Middlesex District Attorney's office and was later referred to the state Attorney General's office. In addition, the police department embarked on its own review of evidence room procedures and policies. It has since instituted additional measures to "ensure accountability and safeguard of all evidence," according to the town.

Dubeshter will be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court. A date has not yet been set.
