Framingham Advertises For Volleyball Coach

Framingham Public Schools posted the girls volleyball coach position today, Aug. 31, with a starting date of “immediately.”

Tryouts for the girls volleyball team started on Thursday, Aug. 27. The season began without a coach.

After parents became concerned that the season might not happen, Framingham High Principal Elyse Torbert stepped in and asked freshman volleyball coach Stephanie Oliveira to run tryouts on Thursday.

In is unknown why last season’s head coach Emily Viti, who is employed at Framingham High in the Resiliency For Life department, is not returning.

Viti was both the girls volleyball head coach in the fall and the boys volleyball head coach in the spring.

Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott told Framingham Patch on Friday he planned to advertise the coaching position this week.

It is unknown if Viti, who was in her 10th season as boys volleyball head coach and led that squad to the MIAA Division 1 Central finals last year as the #9 seed, may be back as head coach for the boys team .

Below is the job description posted today, Aug. 31:

JOB GOAL: Motivate student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport, good sportsmanship, integrity, and character development.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Varsity or college coaching experience is preferred. Experience working in a high school setting is strongly desired.
• Successful completion of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Fundamentals of Coaching Course, the NFHS Sports First Aid course and the NFHS Sport Specific Technical and Tactical Skills Course for the specific sport coached.
• Current and valid CPR certification.
• Strong communication skills to diverse populations.
• Ability to address adversity with strong conflict resolution skills.
• Second language ability is also a plus.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Athletic Director and or High School Principal may find appropriate and acceptable.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform all duties/responsibilities assigned by the Director of Athletics and High School Principal.
• Collaborate with the FHS staff, including Administration, Teachers and the FHS Athletic Association.
• Model the behaviors outlined in the National Federation Coaches Code of Ethics, especially those pertaining to sportsmanship.
• Have full control of the team in all matters pertaining to coaching and athletic discipline.
• Implement FHS Athletic Department policies and team rules as per FHS Student’/Parent handbook
• Be responsible for information contained in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook, League Handbook and the FHS Student/Parent Handbook.
• Supervise all junior varsity, assistant and or Freshmen coaches.
• Attend all Athletic Department and MEHS meetings that deal directly with the sport coached, including but not limited to pre-season, all-star meetings, facilities and fields meetings, and athletic awards meetings.
• Stay informed of rule changes, trends, and recommendations that affect the particular sport.
• Unless otherwise approved, be present at each practice session and at all contests of the sport coached. This includes supervision, at all times, of the weight room, locker room and shower areas until the area is secured before and after practices and contests.
• Develop an organized written practice plan to include adequate warm-up and cool-down procedures on a daily basis.
• Verify that the facilities and equipment are safe and that safety procedures are taught and followed in all areas.
• Implement a game plan.
• Establish avenues of communication with other adults to identify potential resources for the enhancement of FHS athletics.
• Work with community members who are involved in youth sports in order to encourage the young women and young men to continue to participate in sports at the high school level.
• Develop an approach to coaching which encourages outreach to the parents of the athletes and to other adults who care about the athletes (booster clubs are one part of this outreach)
• Directly supervise squad members at home and away contests.
• Supervise all team members that are transported by school buses. This includes making sure all team members travel to and from games and practices (when applicable) by school transportation.
• Be responsible for the distribution and collection of the school’s athletic equipment before, during and after the coaching season.
• Direct completed score report forms, and official’s vouchers immediately following a contest and email score reports immediately following games.
• Have an awareness of school athletic awards policy and procedures. Distribute athletic awards in accordance with school policy.
• Have current knowledge of NCAA and NIAA recruiting policies, regulations and admission requirements.
• Follow current procedures for completing end-of-season responsibilities.
