Framingham To Begin Weekly Naloxone Distribution

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Starting Tuesday, August 13, the City of Framingham Public Health Department will distribute free Naloxone kits and provide training at 188 Concord Street, Framingham from 3 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday.

This is a great opportunity for everyone in the community to help save lives, said Health Director William Murphy.

Opioid-related overdose deaths in Massachusetts decreased by 10 percent in 2023—the largest single-year decline in over a decade—largely due to the widespread availability of naloxone (Narcan), a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.

Why You Should Carry Naloxone:

● Overdose Prevention: Naloxone can rapidly reverse the effects of opioids, preventing fatal overdoses. More than 80,000 of the 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved opioids.
● Bystander Intervention: In many opioid overdose cases, bystanders are present. Having naloxone allows bystanders to take immediate action and save lives.
● Accidental Ingestion: If you have opioid prescriptions at home, naloxone is crucial in case of accidental ingestion, especially by children.
● Safety for Seniors: Many seniors take prescription medications that could interact with opioids, leading to accidental overdoses. Having naloxone can be a crucial safety measure.
● Youth Protection: Teens and young adults are at risk of experimenting with substances, and naloxone can be a life-saving resource in emergencies.
