Framingham High Likely To Have New Athletic Director When School Opens

Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott was at Framingham High meeting with Principal Elyse Torbert, and a change is expected next week.

Framingham High School will likely have a new athletic director, when school starts next week.

Framingham Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott told Framingham Patch that Gary Doherty, who has been athletic director since 2002, likely will return to the classroom to teach.

Scott was at Framingham High this week, as was Assistant Superintendent of Schools Frank Tiano. Both had meetings with Framingham High Principal Elyse Torbert.

Scott said he has yet to name an interim athletic director, but there are several internal candidates, he is considering.

He told Patch the plan is in progress, and has several moving pieces to put in place, and likely will not be official until Monday.

Scott said Doherty, who was the coach of the football team in 2000 when they won the Division 2 Super Bowl, will continue as head football coach this fall.

The football team was winless last season, and only won 2 games the previous season.

Doherty will also become a part of the Framingham High teaching staff, teaching in the physical education department, said Scott. Students should expect to have him as a teacher as early as next week.

Scott said the new interim athletic director, and eventually the permanent athletic director, will not coach.

Doherty has been head football coach and athletic director for more than a decade.

Scott said this plan has been discussed for more than a year.
