Framingham State Welcomes Class of 2019, New Science Hall

Students began classes at Framingham State on Wednesday, Sept 2, as construction continues on the University's newest dorm.

Over the weekend, hundreds of students moved on to the campus of Framingham State University.

Yesterday, Sept. 2, classes began for all students.

Ninety-five percent of the Class of 2019 came from Massachusetts.

Along with welcoming the Class of 2019, this school year also heralds the opening of the new science center at Hemenway Hall.

The University undertook a $62 million, 60,000 square foot science center upgrade at Hemenway Hall.

The four-story addition includes 16 science laboratories, including related prep and supply spaces, plus facility research spaces, joined to the existing facility by a four-story common space.

Constructed in 1963, Hemenway Hall had an annex added in 1974. The interior and exterior renovations to the existing Hemenway Hall and the annex provides a fully accessible, substantially improved teaching environment including seismic, structural, fire protection, mechanical and electrical system upgrades as well as repairs and improvements to the facades including windows. The addition is LEED Silver certified.

A ribbon cutting is planned for later this fall.

The project designer was Ellenzweig, with construction by Barr & Barr. The project was administered by the Massachusetts Capital Asset Management and Maintenance.

Construction continues on campus for the University’s newest dorm.

The $37 million dorm is being constructed where a parking lot was on Maynard Road on the Universty’s campus.

When completed in fall 2016, it will have 286-beds, and be the University’s eighth dorm.

The present seven dorms house about 1,900 undergraduates on campus.

The last dorm constructed on campus - North Hall - opened in 2011.

The in-state tuition is $8,700 at Framingham State. The out-of-state tuition is $14,780. the cost of room & board (standard dorm and silver meal plan) is another $10,000+.

Framingham State, a public college, was founded in 1839 as the first public Normal school in the country. Its 72-acre campus is located in Framingham, just south of Route 9.
