FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham has been chosen as the site of an Eversource home heating experiment, and about 100 customers along Concord Street will soon be able to tap into an ancient source of heating and cooling.

Beginning in mid-2022, Eversource will construct a geothermal network along Concord Street. Homes and businesses in the area will be able to tap into the system to see how it complements existing heating and cooling systems.

Eversource will monitor the system for about three years to see how cost-effective and efficient it is. Framingham was chosen for its mix of buildings and the city's existing commitments to cut carbon emissions.

“Eversource is all in on a clean energy future, and we’re excited about our geothermal pilot with the City of Framingham to explore how a shared geothermal network can reliably and more efficiently serve a local neighborhood with a diverse group of customers,” Eversource President of Gas Operations Bill Akley said in a news release.

Residents have the option of participating in the pilot. Eversource has published a brochure explaining what will happen during construction and implementation of the geothermal system, including the potential impact on utility bills.
