WORCESTER – A third defendant was arraigned on a murder charge Monday in the shooting death of a Worcester man last July, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Jeffery Beltre-Rojas, 27, of Worcester, was arraigned in Central District Court today after Worcester Police took him into custody Monday morning following a month on the Massachusetts State Police Most Wanted list.

The charges stem from a July 9, 2020 incident in which Luis Tiru-Romero was shot in the chest and head. He had remained hospitalized and in other medical facilities before he died while in hospice care in New York on Jan. 30, 2021.

Beltre-Rojas previously faced charges of assault to murder and assault and battery with a firearm, but the charge was upgraded to murder upon the victim’s death as a result of his injuries sustained in the shooting.

Judge Andrew D’Angelo ordered Beltre-Rojas held without bail. He is due back in court on Sept. 28 for a probable cause hearing.

Two other men have also been charged in the shooting of Tiru-Romero. Anthony Negron, 26, of Camden, N.J., and Jose A. Merced, 32, of Worcester, were arraigned in Central District Court in February on the charge of murder. Both had previously been indicted and arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on a variety of charges connected to the shooting.
