Patriots Sign Grafton Native Obi Melifonwu: Sports Reports

The former UConn and Raiders player has signed with The Patriots.

GRAFTON, MAβ€”A Grafton native has been signed by The New England Patriots, according to reports.

Obi Melifonwu, who is 24 and born in London, England, was chosen in the Patriots' secondary, following a second-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2017, reports CBS Local.

A former University of Connecticut safety, Melifonwu met with The Patriots just about two weeks after getting released by the Oakland Raiders, which he played five games but sustained injuries, according to the UConn blog. Melifonwu fills a position in which the Pats are short, and will also help cover tight ends and running backs.

That Patriots wrote on their official NFL page about Melifonwu that he has an "elite size with premium athletic traits that should show up at combine testing and a "sharp focus when the ball is in the air."
