Mudslide Closes Route 1

A mudslide across Route 1 in Topsfield on Tuesday evening closed one of the North Shore's main roads.

A major thoroughfare on the North Shore was closed for more than two hours Tuesday night after a mudslide sent rocks and dirt across the road.

It happened at the peak of the evening commute - at about 5:15 p.m.

The mudslide closed Route 1 (Boston Street) between High Street (Route 97) and Ipswich Road in Topsfield, according to the Topsfield DPW and MassDOT.

Wenham police were called to assist Topsfield police closing the road and redirecting traffic.

After the mudslide, a tree came down on one of the cars stuck in the traffic. Several cars also suffered flat tires from debris in the road. No serious injuries were reported.

The road was reopened at about 7:30 p.m. after a crew from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation came out and cleared the road.
