4. Hurricane Preparedness: The American Red Cross launched its official Hurricane App yesterday, putting lifesaving information right in the hands of people who live in or who visit hurricane prone areas. This free app gives instant access to local and real time information on what to do before, during and after hurricanes. The app also includes a number of features that allow people to monitor personalized weather alerts in locations where family and friends reside and share information with others in their social networks who might also need it. “We want everyone to be to be ready for hurricanes,” Eastern MA Red Cross CEO Jarrett Barrios said. “The Red Cross Hurricane App allows people to receive and spread emergency information and to share their own status with friends and loved ones through social networks, anywhere, anytime.”
5. Olympic Medal Update: The United States is second in the overall medal race with 29, trailing behind China's 30 but well ahead of Japan's 3rd place 17. We are also trailing China in the gold medal tally, 12 to their 17. Yesterday our athletes added 5 total medals to the count, three of them being gold medals won in the Women's 4x200m swimming freestyle, men's 100m freestyle and women's individual time trials (bicycle). Here's a link to Yahoo's medal count page but be warned, it's updated with the actual Olympic timing and not the delayed tv coverage on NBC.
