Each Writers’ Room delivers long-term change in the lives of students, serving students during and after the school day with individualized attention that improves writing skills and fosters creative self-expression. Over the course of a school year, the Writers’ Room will serve nearly every student in the school through whole-class visits, individual writing assistance, and/or after-school extracurricular activities.

“With our first Writers’ Room at a Boston Public School in Hyde Park, we are excited to bring 826 Boston and our tutoring services to neighborhoods across the city,” states Corey Yarbrough, Executive Director of 826 Boston. “We also hope this is an opportunity to bring in new volunteers from neighborhoods who are close to New Mission who haven’t yet been able to support Boston students at our tutoring center or other partner schools.”

“When the opportunity emerged to bring 826 Boston to New Mission High School, we were thrilled,” said William Thomas, Executive Director at New Mission. “Teachers at New Mission have worked on meaningful and highly impactful projects with 826 Boston, particularly focusing on college and scholarship application essays. Since Fall 2021, New Mission students have benefitted from over 1,200 hours of individualized writing support as they craft their college and scholarship application essays. Their unique approach–empowering students to center and share their authentic voices and stories–ensures New Mission students develop competitive and compelling personal narratives that result in acceptance to top-tier schools nationwide and thousands of dollars in scholarship funds.”

With its first Writers’ Room in Hyde Park, 826 Boston is seeking volunteers who are available between the hours of 8 AM to 4 PM from Monday through Thursday. 826 Boston provides training and support for all volunteers, who can visit 826boston.org/volunteer for more information.

826 Boston’s Writers’ Room at New Mission High School is funded in part by an anonymous funder and I See A Foundation.

Every year, 826 Boston supports more than 3,500 students in Boston and publishes more than 700 young authors. 826 Boston believes that great leaps in learning can happen with individualized attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to a student’s success. In 2022, The Boston Globe recognized 826 Boston’s model for its importance in overcoming pandemic learning loss, naming our strategies of high-dosage tutoring and individualized attention as key to getting students back on track.
