Boston Fire Department says "careless disposal of smoking materials" to blame.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — A two-alarm fire devastated a Jamaica Plain residence in the early hours of Wednesday morning, thanks to a poorly disposed cigarette, the Boston Fire Department said.

Firefighters arrived on the scene just before 4:30 a.m.

The Fire Department says the blaze at 36 Hall Street started on the rear porches. Fire investigators later determined the cause of was "careless disposal of smoking materials" on the first-floor back porch.

Three people were displaced, but no injuries were reported. The initial damage estimate was $400,000.
