WEEI's John Dennis Checks Into Rehab

The radio station says the job will be waiting for the legendary Boston broadcaster when he returns.

John Dennis, a Boston radio icon, told the Boston Herald Thursday that he has checked into a rehabilitation facility for excessive drinking.

The 63-year-old, known for co-hosting the sports program, “Dennis and Callahan,” was also previously a sports anchor for 22 years at WHDH-TV before joining WEEI in 1999. Dennis told the Herald that he has gone for long periods without drinking but is aiming to generally indulge in alcohol less.

“I didn’t fall down and crack my head,” he said. “I didn’t get in a fight. None of that stuff. It was an accumulation of more frequent events where I said, ‘Oh, yeah, it would be a good idea to have a cocktail while I’m watching this game.’ And I wanted that to stop.”
