Embrace Rail Trail Project For Our Common Benefit
In a Letter to the Editor, resident says rail trails strengthen the social fabric of a community.

A Letter to the Editor from Axel Wirth:
As a supporter of the proposed Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail Project I do realize that this is a controversial proposal, as it provides benefits to many, yet is perceived as a threat by others. At times it seems that the public debate around the Rail Trail is painting a picture of disaster coming to town.
We, as the citizens of Lynnfield, form a community that shares its values and supports each other. We all have different personal histories and have come to Lynnfield for many different reasons. Some were born and raised in town, yet need to accept the fact that what used to be open space, is now filled with developments. Some moved here because of the quality schools, yet we need to live with the traffic gridlock at drop-off and pickup time. Others picked Lynnfield for its convenient location and easy access to highways, yet those living along streets leading to these highways must accept noise and pollution. Some have found the church community they love, yet often parking cars line the streets. Parents appreciate the playgrounds and sports fields, yet neighbors are exposed to the noise and activity they generate. Some appreciate the charm of the old village, yet they live next to public facilities like town hall, DPW, fire station, and library.

I could go on with examples, but my point is simple – we form a community where we should accept that at times, what is to the benefit of the larger public requires compromise by others. We don’t live in isolation and do need to accept that progress may include changes in the utilization of public land or facilities that are now being looked at for new uses to benefit the larger community.
Rail Trails have proven they promote mental and physical health, as well as strengthen the social fabric of a community. Cities and towns across America are turning to the bicycle to help address challenges of congestion, pollution, and lack of outdoor exercise. Let us, as residents and leaders of Lynnfield, come together and embrace the Rail Trail project for our common benefit.
