As a mom of three and the Director of Family and Community Relations in Lynnfield, I'm deeply committed to helping families and patients in crisis find the right treatment resources. Over the years, I've come to appreciate the importance of mental health awareness for adolescents, especially during the month of May - Mental Health Awareness Month.

Working closely with psychiatric hospitals, social workers, therapists, treatment professionals, patients, and families has shown me just how vital it is to understand and address mental health issues early on. Just like many health issues, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible impact early detection and intervention can have on the lives of teenagers and adolescents. This experience has also taught me the importance of reducing stigma, encouraging help-seeking behavior, and creating a supportive environment for our children.

One lesson I hold dear is the power of fostering a supportive environment for teens. Having open and honest conversations about mental health creates an atmosphere in which adolescents feel at ease discussing their emotions and seeking help when needed. Both as a mother and a mental health professional, I recognize the value of empathetic listening when it comes to the concerns of adolescents.

Another key aspect of nurturing teens' mental health is encouraging self-care and mindfulness. Teaching adolescents the importance of setting aside time for themselves, participating in activities they enjoy, and practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation is crucial in maintaining their mental well-being.

Additionally, stressing the significance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep is an essential and beneficial tool. Assisting teens in developing these healthy habits should result in noticeable improvements in their overall mental well-being.

When professional help is necessary, parents should never hesitate to reach out to mental health resources available in our community, including therapists, support groups, and online resources. It's crucial for our children to understand that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

We are very fortunate that A Healthy Lynnfield has made it possible for Lynnfield residents to be able to access INTERFACE, a non-crisis, free and confidential help and referral line that offers assistance with outpatient mental health counseling services and general mental health resources. 1-888-244-6843

Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity for parents like me to educate ourselves and support our children on their mental health journey. By understanding common mental health issues, creating a supportive environment, and providing resources, we can make a significant difference in our teens' lives as they navigate the challenges of adolescence.
