Several young patriotic Lynnfield residents celebrated Veterans Day weekend by showing their appreciation for our veterans. Pictured are Alexandra, Nicholas, Ava and Paul Buonfiglio, Joe Hennessey and Victor Buonfiglio.

These special people could have spent a sunny Saturday doing a lot of other things but decided this was the best way to spend it. They were part of a group who went to Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne to help place 57,000 flags on the graves of the courageous men and women who fought for our freedom. Operation Flags for Vets was founded by Raynham resident, Paul Monti, after his son, SFC Jared Monti was killed in Afghanistan.  (Monti was the inspiration for the CMA Song of the Year, I Drive Your Truck, when a songwriter hears him say in an NPR interview that he he deals with the grief of losing Jared by driving his truck.) Monti was shocked to discover that there was not a flag on his son’s grave on Veterans Day and inquired about it at the cemetery office. After being told that he could not put a flag on his son’s grave, he began a four-and-a-half-year fight that took him all the way to Washington before he received word that he would now be allowed to place a flag on the grave. He knew he had to include all the veterans.

This sense of honor for the veterans was shared by those who participated including these six outstanding young people. As one of them said, “We got to pay tribute to the veterans who are so often forgotten. It was great to honor them for Veterans Day like they all deserve.”
