Barbeques are very popular during the summer months, but when grills are not used safely, things can go horribly wrong. For safe grilling, always follow your owner’s manual and practice the safety tips provided by www.mass.gov/service-details/grilling-safety.

Leave fireworks to the professionals. All fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts for private residents. This is true even if you buy them legally in another state. This includes sparklers, party poppers, snappers, firecrackers, and more. Go enjoy one of the many professional fireworks displays near you this year. The Department of Fire Services has some helpful information at www.mass.gov/service-details/leave-fireworks-to-the-professionals.

Summer is the time for keeping your lawns well-manicured. Please follow these safety tips for gasoline and lawn mowers.

  • Gasoline vapors are highly flammable. They stay on your clothing and can ignite if you light a match or cigarette.
  • Store gasoline only in approved containers, outside, or in a building not attached to the house.
  • Never keep gasoline inside the home. Keep gasoline away from all heat sources such as smoking materials, pilot lights, campfires, and grills.
  • Never fuel a lawn mower while it is hot. Let it cool off first.
  • Keep hands and feet away from a mower while it is running.

Summer is a time for outdoor recreational activities including swimming. Swimming pools and spas are great places for family fun.

What if kids had gills and fins? If that were the case, no parent or caregiver would ever have to worry about their children’s safety in or around the water. The reality, of course, is that children do not possess these built-in swimming abilities, and it is of utmost importance to teach them how to swim. It is critical for families to follow other essential water safety steps to help prevent child drowning incidents.

Stay Close, Be Alert and Watch

  • Always watch children and never leave them unattended.
  • Have a charged phone close by at all times.
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first.
  • Learn and practice water safety skills
  • Learn to swim and make sure your kids do, too.
  • Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.

Adopt and practice as many safety steps as possible, you never know which safety step will save a life – UNTIL IT DOES. There are No Second Chances. Here’s are two important PSAs on the subject:
