5 Things You Can't Do in Malden

There's plenty of things to do in Malden, but here are a few you can't.

  1. :  Not today. State run swimming pools are closed today after a woman’s body was found floating in a Fall River pool on Wednesday. The pools are closed until the state completes a review of safety procedures, expected within 24-48 hours.

  2. Cross Main Street at the intersection of Ferry and Salem streets without worrying you’ll be hit by a car: Cars traveling down Salem Street have a green light to make the right-hand turn onto Main Street at the same time pedestrians have the walk light.  City officials have been notified about this but don’t seem to think it’s a problem.

  3. Go to a Movie Theater: Although Malden once had 7 movie theaters, they’re all gone now. The last one was the Granada Theatre which used to be at 21 Pleasant Street and closed in the mid-'80s. Blame the warehouse theater industrial complex.

  4. Complain there’s no variety of restaurants in Malden SquareWithin a few blocks there are 3 Vietnamese; 1 Ethiopian, 1 Chinese; 2 Indian; 1 Asian Chinese/Japanese fusion with live jazz; 2 Mediterranean-style bistros; 2 Irish; 2 American steak houses; and 1 Italian; all sit-down restaurants.

  5. Go to the library on the weekend:  Summer hours kicked in on June 11 but every Saturday morning there are still people who show up, hoping and waiting for the doors to open. They’ll have to wait until fall hours kick in on Sept. 6 but even then the library is closed on Sundays.
