Applications Available For Affordable Housing Units In Malden

The city just completed construction on the new building.

MALDEN, MA — The city announced it is accepting applications for five new affordable home units on 272 to 274 Cross St.

The construction of the units broke ground in January on a vacant property the city purchased with $1.1 million worth of American Rescue Plan Act funds. Chelsea-based nonprofit Neighborhood Developers used the foundation of a partially demolished three-family home to build three two-bedroom units and two one-bedroom units.

Applications can be found online and the winner will be decided through a lottery. They are due on Tuesday, Oct. 7 with the lottery slated to take place two weeks later. According to the city, Malden residents will receive some form of an advantage in the draw.

“For too many families, the dream of homeownership is out of reach. I am thrilled that our commitment to affordable housing has paid off, and a property that was once vacant and an eyesore has been transformed into five affordable homes for first-time homebuyers,” Mayor Gary Christenson said.
