Malden Veterans Housing Project Gets Crucial Funding

The work is led by the Volunteers of America of Massachusetts, which operates local facilities such as Forestdale Park assisted living.

MALDEN, MA — The city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund has awarded a grant to the Volunteers of America of Massachusetts to help fund the development of veterans housing on 105 Salem St.

The $400,000 grant will be paid through Malden’s inclusionary zoning program. The plan for the structure is to renovate it into 12 studio rental units for veterans, with 10 qualifying as affordable. Three will be restricted to 30 percent of the area median income, three to 50 percent, and four to 80 percent.

“Malden residents take pride in caring for our vulnerable neighbors and giving back to our community," Mayor Gary Christenson said. “The sacrifices our veterans have made to uphold our democracy represents this value perfectly.”
