Ex-Haitian Mayor Living In Malden Convicted: Report

The man, living in Malden, was convicted of lying about his transgressions to obtain a United States visa.

MALDEN, MA — A former Haitian mayor residing in Malden was found guilty for lying on his visa application about multiple attacks against his political opponents, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Jean Morose Viliena was the mayor of Les Irois, a town of approximately 22,000 people. His alleged crimes date back two decades in which he committed what is described as “violent atrocities” that killed one person and left multiple others injured.

According to prosecutors, Viliena led a group of people to the home of a political opponent when they shot the opponent’s younger brother, and killed him by smashing his skull with a rock.
Viliena faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
