Today is Thursday, Dec. 16. Here are five things you need to know:

Today's warmer, but it's still below freezing: Look on the bright side: It's cold, but at least it's warmer than yesterday. It isn't warm enough to make a snowman sweat, but today is the first day of a gradual warming trend. As always, dress accordingly. 

A dubious distinction: The New York Times ran a short, shocking article about Malden 147 years ago today. It was a day-after report about the first murder during a bank robbery in the country. Young Frank Converse was shot and killed by an assailant who stole $5,000 from a Malden bank. Twenty-two years later, in 1885, Converse's parents built and dedicated the city's library to their son. The beautiful Converse Library remains the city's literary and artistic center.

Once more, with feeling: The Immigrant Theater Group's program closes today at 10 a.m. at the senior center. 

Get some advice and finish your manuscript: The library's writing group meets again tonight at 7 p.m..
