Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 28

Epic sledding ahead.

Today is Tuesday, Dec. 28. Here are five things you need to know:

Windy is putting it lightly: There's no snow expected today or in the foreseeable future, but today's still going to be a bear because of the wind. Oh sure, the National Weather Service's wind advisory lifted at 6 a.m., but that means the sustained winds won't top 31 mph. If you look at the forecast for today, you'll see sustained winds of 20 mph and gusts of 43mph. Expect more drifting snow and sub-zero wind chills.

Diaper divas: Song and Rhyme Time returns to Malden Library today. Bring the kids at 10:30 a.m. to help learn about reading through song and play.

Add your storm photos: We asked and our users delivered. The pictures submitted in our "Stick Your Camera Out the Window Art Project" have been great. !

All the cool kids are sledding at Fellsmere: By yesterday afternoon, most Maldonians had dug out their cars and took their stir-crazy kids to Fellsmere, where the hills made for perfect sledding runs. Today should offer more of the same. It'll be cold as all get out today, so bundle the kids up like Ralphie's little brother

Lost under the flakes: The storm dominated the headlines and broadcast reports, but the real news—the real tragedy—was up in Woburn, where 60-year-old police officer Jack Maguire was killed in a shootout after three men tried to rob a Kohl's jewelry case. Malden has had its own share heartache brought about by gun violence this year, but Maguire's death is another reminder of what's at stake for police officers in Woburn, in Malden and everywhere else.
