MALDEN, MA — Beloved Chelsea-based Floramo’s Restaurant will soon open a Malden location, Mayor Gary Christenson said in an Twitter post this week.

Floramo’s confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon.

The restaurant will be moving into the former home of Malden’s Dockside Restaurant and Bar, which closed in March. The site briefly housed another restaurant – House of Smoke – before that establishment also closed.

Floramo’s focuses on barbecue, seafood and Italian cuisine. It opened in 1984 in Chelsea and is now run by second-generation owner John Floramo.

Floramo’s expansion to Malden comes after the business already branched out to Wakefield earlier this year, taking over another former Dockside restaurant there.

As these changes take place, the future of Floramo’s longtime spot in Chelsea remains somewhat uncertain.

Developers are moving forward with plans to build an 11-story research and development facility at the current Chelsea site, according to the Chelsea Record. Developers, however, have offered to leave space for Floramo’s to return in the new building, the paper reported last month.

The upcoming Floramo’s Malden restaurant will be located at 229 Centre Street in Malden.
