Iconic Country Music Comes To Malden In Upcoming Show

Performer Matt York will highlight the songs and stories of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings this week.

MALDEN, MA — The Malden Public Library's "Live on the Lawn" Summer Concert Series will soon feature the songs of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings at an event on Wednesday.

The event is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Malden Public Library at 36 Salem Street. It will feature a performance by Matt York and his musical project — Highwaymen: Songs and Stories.

A longtime singer/songwriter based in New England, York has won acclaim for his various musical endeavors. The Highwaymen project is one of several such projects that York has assembled over the course of his Americana/country career, drawing its name from the Highwaymen supergroup that Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson and Jennings formed in the 1980s.

Living in Pembroke, York has recently taken his show on a tour across the state, playing dozens of dates largely thanks to funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council program.

He has written a companion book about the Highwaymen and the group's members, which he is selling at individual performances.

The Malden Local Cultural Council is supporting York’s upcoming show after awarding York a grant to bring him to town.
