Illegal Firearm Sale Nets Malden Man

Three adults and one juvenile were arraigned on Thursday in West Roxbury Municipal Court in connection with the unlawful sale of a rifle believed to be a semiautomatic AK-47.

Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force and the Boston Police Department Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the ATF and the Explosive Boston Group II, affected an arrest for firearm related offenses about 7 Wednesday night at the McDonald’s in the area of 718 American Legion Highway in District E-18 (Hyde Park).

As part of an ongoing investigation, undercover Boston officers made arrangements with the suspect to purchase a high capacity firearm. As a result of the investigation, officers met the suspect at the above address to complete the transaction. The suspect, accompanied in a vehicle by four additional males, handed the officers a bag containing a Norinco Mak-90 Sporter caliber 7.62x39 and two magazines with ammunition in exchange for money.

The suspect entered a vehicle with the other males, and they attempted to drive away when they were blocked from doing so by additional marked police units. The suspects then attempted to flee on foot, but were apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

The primary suspect, 19-year-old Tyree Cannady of Charlestown, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a high capacity feeding device, and illegal sale of a firearm.

During a search of his person, Cannady was found to have 15 individual bags of crack cocaine in his pocket and was additionally charged with possession with intent to distribute Class B drugs.

The operator of the vehicle, 19-year-old Rakyah Brown of Malden, and the passengers, 22-year-old Rashean Brown of Boston, 21-year-old Chevrick Humber of Dorchester, and a 17-year-old male juvenile from Roxbury were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of a high capacity feeding device.

Humber was additionally found to have an active warrant for assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon out of Dedham District Court.

Cannady was held on $50,000 cash bail and had his open bail in a Dorchester assault and battery case revoked. The juvenile, who allegedly acted as a lookout, was held on $10,000. Rakyak Brown, who allegedly drove the group to the scene, was held on $500 cash bail. Rashean Brown was held on $1000 cash bail. Chevrick was held on $1000 cash bail.
