Malden Breaks Ground On Affordable Housing Project
272 to 274 Cross St. will be renovated into multipe affordable housing units.
MALDEN, MA — An affordable housing project on Cross Street broke ground this week, and is expected to be completed in the fall.
The five units are being constructed by The Neighborhood Developers, a Chelsea-based nonprofit organization. The foundation for the new units is a partially demolished three-family home that currently occupies the address. Three of the units will be affordable to households earning 100% Area Median Income, and two will be affordable to households earning 80%.
Mayor Gary Christenson, who was in attendance for the groundbreaking, emphasized he and the city’s emphasis on creating housing opportunities for residents.

“What was previously an unoccupied and vacant parcel, will now be the site for affordable housing for residents so residents who want to remain in Malden, can stay in Malden,” Christenson said.
The city paid more than $1.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to acquire the property. The Affordable Housing Trust Fund Board was also granted $450,000 from the city to cover development costs.
