New Malden Park Named After Police Sargent
The park is named in honor of an important figure in the city's recent history.
MALDEN, MA — City leaders celebrated the completion of a new playground at Kierstead Park.
The park, located off of Willow Street, received $2.2 million worth of upgrades headlined by a brand new playground for children of all ages and abilities, new trees, and restoration to existing little league baseball field through the implementation of lighting, bleachers, and improved lighting.
The park is named in honor of the late Arthur Kierstead. The former Police sergeant was the founder and first president of Malden Little League.
The project was led by Malden’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development. According to the OSPCD, $900,000 of the project’s budget was funded through American Rescue Plan Act funds, $350,000 from state earmarks, and $400,000 from Community Development Block Grant funds.

Mayor Gay Christenson, who attended the park’s formal ribbon cutting, expressed his belief that the community will be wholly satisfied with the upgrades.
